My next project is making two violoncello da spalla.
One will be on my own design and other one will be a model based on J.C.Hoffmann.
J.C.Hoffmann is known as good friend of J.S.Bach and was a skillful luthier.
Since the technical drawing of museum and informations isn’t enough to make a instrument I avoided to make a copy of Hoffmann but this time I’m going to challeng to merged all informations to make one.
The main three are the technical drawing of museum, information and mesurments which I got from resarch done with my friends @violoncellodaspalla @paulshelleyviolins in Leipzig and also there will be some deductions from other documents which include the lost spalla during the world war. Of course I’ll use many other documents and informations which can complement the project.
Due to the lack of informations it is not possible to make a copy but I would like enjoy this occasione given by dear client. Thanks and here is the very rough sketch.

ご依頼いただいてきた修理などがひと段落し、ようやく楽器作りに戻れそうです。

次は肩掛けチェロを2台作りますが、1台はこれまでのモデル、もう1台はお客様と相談し、初めてJ.C.Hoffmann のモデルに挑戦します。

J.C.Hoffmann の肩掛けチェロは、今日に見られる肩掛けチェロの原型の一つというべきもので、Bachもそれを所有していたのではないかという研究者の意見もある貴重なものですが、これまでほとんど私も含めてコピーは作られてきませんでした。

その理由は博物館の図版だけでは楽器を作れないという問題があったためと思われます。
Leipzigの博物館にあるHoffmannの楽器は度重なる過去の修理によって演奏が不可能なものになっているばかりか、ネックも挿げ替えられており、それらを元にしたテクニカル・ドローイングを用いて作るのはあまり不確かでした。

私自身も、Hoffmannのコピーを作るよりも、プロポーションから設計した方が確実にモデルを作ることができたため、この取り組みは課題としてこれまで残してきました。

今回は、コロナ前に友人たち(ガイダーノ・ヴィスティーニ夫妻 @violoncellodaspalla 、ポール・シェリー @paulshelleyviolins )と行った際の調査資料と、その他の文献・研究資料を一つにまとめて、当工房なりのHoffmannモデルにしてみたいと考えています。

これまで10台ほどの肩掛けチェロを作ってきた経験を足場として、演奏可能なモデルとして再現できればうれしいです。

上の写真はラフ・スケッチですが、幅の狭い上下と、特徴的な渦巻きなどが、南ドイツの素朴さを見せているように思います。実際の製作では、スケッチ以上に素朴な表情を出すことができればと願っています。
